I once had two puppies from the same litter… a boy and a girl. I’ll refer to them as Fido…

I wanted to see what the internet said about the “qualities of a best friend”… See if the results sound as familiar to you as they do to me: “Friends make life more beautiful …. They add a certain kind of spark to life. You can talk to your friends about everything; share your deepest secrets and even your silly little everyday stories… Friends are always there to support you through the ups and downs of your life.” Why does that sound so familiar? Does it not sound like the relationship with your 4-legged best friend?
Here is a list of some of the qualities of a human best friend. Let’s see how our furry friends measure-up:
No doubt, one of the very best qualities of a dog is that they do not judge! A dog has no predetermined “opinions” or “standards” from which to judge you.
To quote John Grogan, author of “Marley and Me”: “… A dog doesn’t care if you are rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull. Give him your heart and he will give you his. It is really quite simple…”
Canines cannot fake their feelings for us. They are totally free from pretense. He is a true, sincere friend. A dog delights in the simplicity of your presence. I love that! His love is real and lasting… unconditional.
You can be completely weird or silly around your dog and he won’t care! Sometimes he even wags his tail like “he gets it”. He doesn’t care what you look like in the mornings, or if you’re having a bad hair day. He doesn’t care about those extra pounds you may obsess over. You can always be yourself and he loves you regardless of your faults!
Don’t worry… he won’t tell your secrets or talk behind your back. My guess is that he wouldn’t even if he could talk!
Your 4-legged friend is always there for you. He is faithful, steadfast, and forever loyal. Your life is his whole life!
Dogs make great listeners. Not only do they listen, but they actually act like they’re being compassionate, don’t they? If you’re sad, they seem to sense it. If you’re happy, they’ll be happy too – even if they don’t know why!
Just look at them… doesn’t that alone make you feel better? That’s one of the reasons therapy dogs are so wonderful. They cheer you up not only by their presence, but they also seem to sense your need and long to make you feel better. Do you feel lonely? How about a good nudge or snuggle? Do you feel sick? I’ll lay here beside you until you are well. Do you feel sad? Let me lay my head on your knee… or better yet, here’s my ball, lets play!
It’s true! Dogs have certain inherent qualities that people may never have. They can read us like a book. By studying our facial expressions and body language, they learn a lot about us without us even saying a word. They’re intuitive and attentive to us.
We’re so lucky to have dog in our lives. The bond we enjoy with them is truly AMAZING!
